WordPress or a bespoke website: how to choose

WordPress and bespoke are not opposites. A WordPress website can have a custom design and custom functionality. The useful decision is whether your requirements are mainly publishing content or running business-specific processes.

Separate design from the underlying platform

A tailored visual design does not require every part of a website to be written from scratch. Equally, using a familiar content management system does not guarantee a good customer journey. Ask what the proposed platform makes easier and what work remains to deliver the actual brief.

WordPress provides publishing and content-management features that can be extended through themes and plugins. Its official feature overview describes those capabilities. A custom application can be built around a different framework where the main requirement is business behaviour rather than editorial publishing.

Where Laravel fits in the conversation

Laravel is a PHP application framework, rather than a ready-made publishing system equivalent to WordPress. Its documentation describes facilities developers use to build applications. Choosing a framework still leaves the work of designing screens, implementing business rules and arranging operation of the finished system.

A Laravel-versus-WordPress comparison therefore needs a specific brief. A business primarily publishing service pages may value an established editor. A business managing a specialised approval or booking process may need application development. Ask the developer to show how their proposed approach supports the work your users need to do. If your brief already calls for Laravel, explore Digizu’s Laravel development service.

Avoid the plugin-count argument on its own

The number of extensions is not enough to judge a site. Their quality, overlap, maintenance and role matter. A few poorly chosen dependencies can cause trouble; several carefully selected ones may serve a clear purpose. Ask which business requirements each component meets and who maintains it.

Similarly, “bespoke” is not a guarantee of speed, security or ease of change. Those depend on implementation and ongoing care. If an existing WordPress site has a specific fault, investigate that fault before deciding the platform must go.

Consider a mixed approach

A content website can link to or integrate with a separate booking product or application. That can keep publishing simple while letting operational software do its own job. The boundaries still need attention: navigation, authentication where applicable, data ownership and the customer’s route through the two systems.

See booking software choices for a practical example. If the existing website mainly needs clearer messaging or a new design, read redesign versus rebuild before commissioning replacement software.

Ask suppliers to explain their recommendation

Give each supplier the same brief and ask them to show how editors, customers and staff complete the important tasks. Compare maintenance responsibilities, access, migration effort and future change costs. A platform recommendation is useful when it is tied to your requirements; familiarity with a tool is not a complete business case.

Discuss the requirements before the platform
